Riverside Section 1 Finalists
Before I start to detail notes about the 4 teams that competed in Riverside, including our top team finisher, GU12 1st Place Championship Team, let me begin by saying that Alhambra Region 60 was excited to qualify 4 teams for the Riverside Section 1 Playoffs this year.
In the years that many of our current players and parents have been involved with Alhambra region, no one could remember our region sending that many teams to compete at the Section Playoffs.
Our players deserve every ounce of credit due to them - they were the ones that competed on the field - but our parents, volunteers, coaches and board members should be granted some credit as well.
Region 60 took some big steps this past weekend and our goals should be to help our region continue to set high standards as we continue to compete in our very tough Area C, Section 1 in seasons to come. With that said, I, as Extended Play Coordinator, would like to personally thank all those that made this 2010-2011 All Star season a blast on and off the field (pitch). This season would not have happened if it were not for all those behind the scenes. Our All Star players, parents, coaches, referees, volunteers and board members.

RIVERSIDE QUICK NOTES:
GU10 Coach German Aranada and Nelson Menendes (assistant) = DNQ for Sunday Finals
The girls tied both games on Saturday and were winning the first game, but tied in the end. Their second game ended in another tie and that did not allow them to score enough points in pool play to advance for Sunday play. The girls played very well and were strong, coaches did a great job of keeping the team in each game. Great job GU10.
GU10 - German Aranda, Coach, Nelson Menendez, Assistant, Team Roster - Amaya Aranda, Malia Evans, Gabriella Garcia, Janelle Guzman, Marina Menendez, Cielo Munoz, Elayna Osterman, Amanda Ramirez, Abigail Thurston, Isabella Veljacic.
BU10 Coach Steve Shahin = Qualified for Sunday and Finished in 2nd place overall in Section
The boys team played with heart and toughness beyond their years. The Riverside experience was the first for the entire team, and at least one player will have the chance to return as he was the only 1st year player on the team. The team won both their opening games on Saturday and Sunday, but in each following games for those days the team began to wear down and in the final Championship game on Sunday they had given all they could. The team lost the final, 2-0, but we are extremely proud of them.
BU10 - Steve Shahin, Coach, Team Roster - David Alvarez, Brian Calderon, Tommy Castillo, Eduardo Flores, Nicholas Hansen, Damian Lira, Kendrick Rivas, George Shahin, Marcos Vazquez, Jun Wema.
BU14 Coach Rodrigo Solis and Juan Rosales (assistant) = DNQ for Sunday Finals
Coach Rodrigo earned much respect from the other section teams in our area by making it to Riverside Playoffs. His boys team fought hard and did score a tie in the first day of play, but did not have enough points to qualify for Sunday and a chance to play for the top spot. The team and parents gave a lot of credit to the hard work displayed by their kids and coach as the season progressed and the team qualified for the Riverside championships.
BU14 - Rodgrigo Robles, Coach, Juan Rosales,
Assistant, Team Roster - Jorge Aguirre, Isaac Colin, David Corona, Dominic Garcia, Edgar Garcia, Ethan Lam, Fernando Mendoza, Keivan Meshkat, Fernando Pineda, Christian Rector, John Rosales, Jacob Small, Alexander Wong, Ernest Wong, Larry Wong.
PHOENIX - GU12 - Carlos Garcia, Coach, Team Roster - Kyrene Beltran, Marissa Castillo, Tiffany Chan, Zoe Chang, Jezteni Espinoza, Sophia Garcia, Tatiana Garnett, Izel Gutierrez, Casey Moore, Gabrielle Morales, Caia Rice, Nicole Vargas.
GU12 Coach Carlos Garcia = 1st PLACE SECTION 1 CHAMPIONS
The girls team won all 4 of their games in a fashion that proved they were number 1 overall from the start. They only allowed 1 goal for the entire weekend and they dominated each team they played by showing that they had more desired to win then any of their opponents. The girls and their coach came in on a mission to complete what they started in Area play and did just that by taking the 1st Place Championship in Section 1. Our Section (Section 1) is on the largest in the country and to be the top team is tremendous. Now they will continue to march towards their final mission STATE CHAMPIONS. The team will be playing in Granden Grove this Sunday, March 13, 2011, and I encourage all of you and your families to come out and cheer your players on. Coach Carlos along with all his players is more than ready to take this challenge head on, and I hope we can all be there to help our girls win their final 2 games.
